SOS Medical Centre Bukavu
The SOS Medical Centre in Bukavu sees about 700 patients each month from the local community. The country's medical resources are over streteched. An estimated 3.8 million people died as a result of violent conflict from 1998 to 2004: either in the civil war itself or as a result of hunger and diseases following the breakdown of supplies and services. The SOS Medical Centre helps orphaned and vulnerable children and their families in the local community. The most common diseases treated include malaria, influenza and gastric illness. The SOS Medical Centre provides basic primary health treatment as well as ante- and post-natal examinations. The SOS Medical Centre also offers comprehensive counselling service and is involved in awareness activities on hygiene measures, HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drugs.
The main and important activities the SOS Medical Centre Bukavu carried out in 2008 are as follows:
- Preventive activities: preventive activities started in February 2008. They include: pre natal and pre school checks up and free check up tests
- Sensitizing activities: 120 sensitizing meetings took place starting from February 2008 for the preventive activities.
a) During the pre school checks up, 48 sensitizing meetings took place. The average is of 4 meetings per month. The themes hereafter have been treated:
- Vaccines calendar, the pre school checks up usefulness, family planning, feeding up children, the HIV aids and free check up, malaria, malnutrition, gastroenteritis’s and following up children’s health between 0 to 2 years.
- Over 529 children were brought to our Medical Centre for pre school checks up in 2008.
b) As for pre natal checks up, 24 sensitizing meetings took place. The average is of 2 meetings per month about the HIV/AIDS free check up. The aim is to reduce HIV/AIDS transmission from mother to the new born. Over 165 women have walked to the SOS Medical Centre for this kind of check up.
c) As far as the Free Check up Centre is concerned, 48 sensitising meetings took place. In other words 4 meetings were monthly organised. The main information went around responsible sex behaviour and free HIV/AIDS checks up
- Healing activities have been carried out without matter and accordingly.
- The Medical Centre had personnel trained in:
a) People affected with HIV/AIDS or living with HIV/AIDS rights
b) How to behave face to malnutrition in South-Kivu
c) Planning family
- The participation in meetings planned about struggling against HIV aids by a local organisation which acts in this field.

- Médecins Sans Frontière (MSF) grants free HIV/AIDS checks up. 195 people have willingly accepted the check up from January to December 2008.
Statistically speaking, the SOS Medical Centre Bukavu activities run as follows in 2008:
A) 889 people joined the Medical Centre either for pre natal or post natal checks up or for HIV free check up.
B) As for other curative illnesses, 6,308 patients got treatments including:
- 3,223 children among whom 546 SOS girls and 775 SOS boys and the number of children from the community rises up to 910 girls and 992 boys.
- 3,085 adults including 1,828 women and 1257 men.
In terms of income money, the Medical Centre has generates 18834$ from January till December 2008 spread as follows:
- 1782.5$ for checks up
- 1611.1$ from laboratory services
- 101.5$ from technical documents
- 15339$ from pharmacy services (selling)
SOS Medical Centre Uvira
Our SOS Medical Centre at Uvira, Congo is not new at all. It’s situated in NAMUKANGAZA Quarter, KALA Avenue in the grouping of KATALA. The rate of frequentation of patients to SOS Medical Centre Uvira has increased a bit for have 3,401 patients this year and 3,361 last year.
It is are two years now since our Medical Centre has opened its doors and the surrounding community becomes progressively integrated in our medical centre by subscriptions or other normal treatment.
In fact, the invoicing system didn’t change since the opening of the centre in November 2006, mean consulting the doctor 1US$ and consulting the nurse for 0.5 US$. Laboratory exams, medication and other technique events are invoiced separately.
For medical centres and other patients supported financially by National on International Organisations, there is a standard invoice that patients pay which covers medication and consulting the doctor/nurse.
During this year we have received 3,401 cases. The received patients are split up as follow:
- SOS children and youth from the SOS Children's Village Uvira: 1,287 among of them 699 boys and 588 girls
- Private patients: 576 among of them 278 masculine and 298 feminine
- FRP: 608 among of them 323 feminine and 285 masculine
- SOS workers and their family members: 677 among of them 339 masculine and 338 feminine
- SOS mothers and Aunts: 253
The income for 2008 is split as follows:
- US dollars: 16830
- Congolese Francs: 1336720 FC = 2227.87$
- Burundian Francs: 1200FBU = 1.1$
That is to say, a total of 19058, 97$ while in 2007 we had 11025.9$, that is to say an increase of 72.8%.
In addition to curative activities realised in the SOS Medical Centre at Uvira in 2008, we also had:
- Medical staff training in counseling
- Preventative activities.
SOS Social Centre Bukavu
The SOS Social Centre, Bukavu is working with orphaned and vulnerable children and their families in the local community, especially those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. This has included practical help with their education. The SOS Social Centre also works to educate children and young people to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and related illnesses.Uvira SOS Social Centre
