Zambia – SOS Medical and Social Centres

Through the provision of health education and medical treatment, the five SOS Social Centres, three SOS Medical Centres and one SOS Mobile Medical Unit in Zambia help to improve the quality of life of thousands of families and children. SOS Social Centres are part of our community based Family Strengthening Programmes which helps Zambian families in the wider community.

SOS Mobile Medical Clinic 1Chipata

Opened in the summer of 2012, the SOS Medical Centre in Chipata brings healthcare to 10,000 children and families in desperate need. Our staff run vaccination campaigns, set up small maternity wards, give advice on hygiene, nutrition, first aid and family planning, and provide education on HIV/AIDS.  An SOS Mobile Medical Unit, launched in 2011, is providing health education and medical treatment to poor and isolated communities. Treating 30 people a day, we are helping to reduce avoidable illness, child mortality and improve the quality of life for rural populations with little access to conventional medicine.

Chipata's Family Strengthening Programme works with 600 children and their families to prevent children from losing the care of their parents. Families where the main caregiver is chronically ill, and grandparent or child headed families are helped to help themselves: we provide extra care for children, access to healthcare and training, and opportunities for carers.
